2009 GULF COAST AGRIBUSINESS CONFERENCE
Growing Small Farms

As part of a regional effort to improve agribusiness profitability and sustainability through education and advocacy, TEAM Santa Rosa Economic Development Council (TEAM), along with the University of Florida-IFAS, Santa Rosa County and Santa Rosa County Cooperative Extension Services, presented the 2009 Agribusiness Conference on February 26 at the Jay Community Center.

BAY AREA FOOD BANK OPENS NEW FACILITY
New facility will allow expanded services throughout Florida Panhandle

The Bay Area Food Bank has moved into a new $1.4 million, 15,000-square-foot distribution center in the Santa Rosa County Industrial Park in East Milton. The new facility will greatly enhance its mission of providing agencies with free or reduced-priced goods as well as increase the annual distribution of food from 2 million to 6 million pounds via pantries at 550 churches and nonprofit organizations across the Florida Panhandle. Additionally, the new facility will allow the Bay Area Food bank to process and reclaim donated food.

Three local businesses attend Panama trade Mission

TEAM Santa Rosa, in conjunction with Florida's Great Northwest, hosted a trade mission to Panama City, Panama January 18th – 22nd, 2009.  The purpose of the mission was to focus on expanding trade and investment relations with the country of Panama.  In total, 21 Northwest Florida delegates were afforded excellent opportunities to meet with targeted businesses while networking with key government and high-level business leaders.

How often do we hear about talented young minds leaving our community in search of better career opportunities? It’s a challenge faced across the board by community leaders, educational systems, businesses and economic development professionals in both Santa Rosa and Escambia. Without the right career focus, graduating students can often find themselves on the outside looking in. If this dilemma becomes widespread, it can lead to “brain drain”, or in other words, a mass exodus of our best and brightest to other communities across the nation leaving our businesses and industries - and, ultimately, our communities - empty-handed.
