TEAM and the University of Florida IFAS Extension partnered this spring for the fourth consecutive year to present another successful Gulf Coast Agribusiness Conference.  Farmers from northwest Florida and southern Alabama attended and participated in programs that introduced new farming techniques, business models and crop ideas.  The event was also a concerted effort to educate youth about the value of agriculture.  This industry is one of Santa Rosa County’s most prominent, and educating the next generation of farmers is vital to sustain it.  The conference was inspiring not only to existing farmers in the area, but also to the upcoming cohort of farmers.

JOBS FOR FLORIDA PASSES SENATE UNANIMOUSLY

At the end of March, the Senate unanimously passed “Jobs for Florida”, an economic development package to strengthen Florida’s economy and encourage job growth.  Senate Bill 1752 is sponsored by Senator Don Gaetz (R-Niceville), Senator Jeremy Ring (D-Margate) and members of the Senate Select Committee on Florida’s Economy, which Gaetz chairs.

DEMOGRAPHIC FACTOID

Based on population growth from 2000 to 2009, the population in Santa Rosa County grew from 117,743 to an estimated 151,779.  This equates to population growth of 29%, earning Santa Rosa County 15th place in growth out of the 67 Florida counties. 

Santa Rosa County is now the 156th fastest growing county in the nation.  This figure is calculated from the 3,141 counties and parishes in the United States.

MILITARY UPDATE

May is Military Appreciation Month.  Robin Punyko, Manager for Gulf Power in Milton, is serving as TEAM’s Chairperson for the month-long event.
